How to Seriously Doodle in Sai by cika How to Seriously Doodle in Sai by cika
Please Deviant Art don't make this so blurry it becomes impossible to read pleasepleaseplease.

I felt like it's probably time for me to make a tutorial.
I teach the basics of Paint Tool Sai and some general drawing tips as well.
Sai really speeds up drawing processes. ;)

I apologize for the Japanese language setting.
I wrote down the English name for each options/tools I used so you can find it in English version as well.
The position of each tool should be the same.
Please tell me if there's any confusing areas.

I will dump the finished image in scraps as well. [link]

basically, when you put the flat colour on the zone you want to color ( like a t-shirt, or the face), if you add a layer over the one with the flat colours ( a one for the shading/lighting ) and select "clipping group", when you work on the empty layer you created over the flat tones one ( adding shades, or lights ) the colour won't go out of the area you coloured before (its really confortable this way, hope you understand my english, even thought im not a native english speaker ^^; )

nice tutorial ^^ though I'm curious, why do you use a regular layer for the lineart rather than a line-art layer? it has better inking tools
Reply
:iconcika:
cika Featured By Owner Jul 26, 2010
Line-art layer uses vector and I feel that they are more difficult to handle and less expressive. It gets frustrating when they automatically adjust points, even if i turn down the watchamacallit... 手ブレ補正...
I only use it when I need to draw mechanical, precise objects or multiple long curves. :3
